Mark Caguioa was his usual virtually unstoppable self but Jay-Jay Helterbrand came out of a mini-slump of sorts. Together, Barangay Ginebra’s “Fast & Furious” tandem scored more than half of their team’s output, most of them in the second half, as the Kings scored a come-from-behind 116-105 victory over Air21 Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Caguioa finished with a league conference-high 35 points, 19 in the second half, while Helterbrand, who was only averaging 9.5 ppg prior to the game, added 25 points, his best game in the conference with 18 of his points coming in the second half. Helterbrand also added 11 assists for the Kings, who rolled to their fourth straight win and 10th overall 14 games to grab the solo lead in the PBA-Talk ‘N Text Philippine Cup and move closer to an outright semifinal berth.
2004-05 MVP Eric Menk added 15 points, six rebounds and five assists, Rudy Hatfield had his eighth double-double of the conference to the tune of 13 points and 13 rebounds, Rafi Reavis also had a double-double of 10 markers and 17 boards while Sunday Salvacion only had eight points, but all in the fourth quarter, including a 5-for-5 stint from the free-throw line which capped Ginebra’s comeback from a 16-point deficit.
“Everybody contributed tonight. Mark and Jay-Jay took care of our offense, Rudy (Hatfield) provided us the energy and Eric (Menk) was a force inside,” said Barangay Ginebra head coach Jong Uichico after the game.
“We scored when we needed to and made stops when we had to,” Uchico added.
The Express got off to a fast start and took the game’s biggest lead at 72-56 on a basket by Yancy de Ocampo with 6:41 to go in the third quarter.
But they couldn’t handle the lead properly and it slowly slipped away due to carelessness and bad decision-making.
Their eighth loss in 14 games formally ended the Express’ bid for an outright semis slot and could have even jeopardized their chances of making the quarterfinals outright.
Barangay Ginebra trailed by 84-90 when the Kings went on a 10-0 run. Salvation ended that run by sinking five straight free throws that put the Kings ahead for the first time, 94-90, with 7:45 left.
Air21 rookie Arwind Santos tied the count at 97 with 4:36 to go but Menk scored over Santos in the next play and Helterbrand hit a free throw for a three-point Ginebra lead.
The Express, who have now alternated wins and losses in their last nine games, had several chances to overhaul the deficit but blew it on bad plays and poor shot selection.
Gary David scored 28 points to lead Air21 while Wynne Arboleda added 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists. (DBC)
